Open Office 3.x Icons

Sun is really doing things up. I just visited openoffice.org to pitch Open Office to my grandparents; they have a brand-spanking new site as well! Version 3.0 is still in beta, but the new features make me want to download it now. To recap that page, the ones that matter are:

Mac OS X support: If you have a Mac an Intel Mac, this will make you happy. It means you don’t need the X11 package, and it looks like it belongs with your other applications.

New icons: Thank goodness. I hate the terrible looking icons present in the 2.x series. They look like they belong in a Windows 95 app.

Regression Equations: The main reason I couldn’t use OOo when I was in Physics was because it would not display the equation of the trendline, which was required for the graphs in our reports. It also can display error bars, and the correlation coefficient! It might be too late for me, but this will certainly help future physicists in their quest for useless knowledge ;)

OOXML Office 2007 Support (not sure if it’s the same thing): This is not a feature. This is a necessary evil.

Solver: I’ve never had any use for this feature as I only do graphs in spreadsheet software, but apparently this is good news for Mac users, as M$ has the audacity to leave out features such as this in their Mac version of MS Office.

The PDF import extension will be available soon. This will be a very cool feature; I hope it works well!

It looks like 3.0 is going to be a fantastic release.
