Gay Club Music: The Same Old Crap

25 05 2008

I’m so sick of going to my local gay club and hearing the SAME music over and over again. It’s always the Wideboys Club remix of Rihanna’s “Shut Up and Drive”, or really bad remixes of Kelis’s “Milkshake”. It’s always pop remixes of pop songs. REMIXES. There are rarely any original electronic songs like “Becoming Insane” by Infected Mushroom, even pop electronic songs like Alice Deejay’s “Better Off Alone” or anything by 4 Strings.

It gets on my nerves because I love dancing. I was at that club last night, and hardly anyone was on the dancefloor, so my friend Bubbles and I took it. (No, that’s not her real name). About thirty minutes later, she whispers in my ear, “Dude, those guys behind you have been watching you this entire time.” I was so happy. But mad at the same time, because although I was dancing my ass off, I knew I wasn’t dancing as well as I could, because the music simply wasn’t good enough for me to dance to.

Why don’t they play some trance? Disco House? Maybe something without lyrics? I wouldn’t even mind the remixes IF THEY WERE ANY GOOD. Like the Hott 22 remix of Loleatta Holloway’s “Dreamin’”? Or maybe even the Thin White Duke remix of Gwen Stefani’s “4 in the Morning”? Try an 80s night once in a while? Come on!

One of the most upsetting things about the music they play is that there is nothing above the drum and the bass. No, the songs aren’t Drum n’ Bass; in fact, they’re considered House. One example that comes to mind is this remix of Jordin Spark’s “No Air”. Do you hear any instruments besides the bass? No. Now listen to this remix of Ne-Yo’s “Because of You”. You hear the bass go until 1:55, when thankfully another instrument comes in. Then at 3:40, the best part of the song hits, with another “high” synth. Which do you think is better?

I understand that this probably only applies to predominantly white gay clubs, as the predominantly black gay clubs I’ve been to do not play electronic music. And I know there are different types of gay clubs. For instance, Rush, a gay club in NYC, played a wide variety of music, not just electronic. [That time, I really did dance like I wanted to, and a guy came up to me and said my dancing was cool :D . Unfortunately when he asked me if I wanted a beer, I was stupid and said 'no', not realizing he would take that as a rejection =( ].

I’ve looked, but I cannot find a similar posts about this subject. Does anyone agree with me? Let me know your thoughts.
